Can someone give the definition of what a dvar code is, or what it stands for?

Dvar stands for Developer Variable. It's something that the devs used to while programming the game to change certain aspects of the game. Dvar codes are ALWAYS written in the 05 codetype as they are always in the 81 offset range. This doesn't mean that all 05 codes are made with Dvars! If an address is in the 81 offset range, it will be written in 05.

For example:
If you tell the code handler that 87642C is a 04 code, as long as it's a valid address (it works as a code), it will take it and process it into memory. And it will be read as 8087642C. However, if you tell it that it's a 05 code it will be read as 8187642C, which is invalid as that address doesn't exist in Wii memory. If you do the latter, I'm not sure what the code handler would do, but you might get a stack dump, which is NOT a good thing!

Writing to an invalid addresses crashes the game. The so-called dvars we refer to only exist in Call of Duty so you're not missing some special game hacking technic. x)
